Webinar: How Vestas Powers their sustainable company culture
Vestas has unlocked the key to engaging their employees through digital energy with their MyVestas internal communications app.
Your questions answered
Can the app be used for other companies, not just companies with a factory?
The platform can be used for all kinds of organizations, not just companies with factories. Our main target group, and where the platform benefits the most, are organizations with a large amount of non-desk workers. So, these could be companies working in the retail, transportation, hospitality, manufacturing/production industries, or any other industry with a primarily non-desk based workforce.
Was there any consideration of using MS products as Viva connections?
We did a thorough investigation of different apps and platforms, and based on the input we chose Relesys.
Is it only an app for telephone or also accessible online?
The app is accessible through a smartphone and is also available through a desktop browser. Whilst the app is primarily targeted towards smartphone users, it is still easily accessible on a desktop as well as a tablet.
What has been your biggest learning from this project?
I would say how willing and able the production employees are to enter the digital world. They want to become part of ONE Vestas just like the rest of us. Another point is how important it is to work with and advise the local management on how to communicate digitally as a leader. This is key in creating trust and motivating the employees to truly engage with the company.
Can you tell more about the point system?
'The app has a built-in gamification system. You can use this to encourage employees to use the app regularly and read the news. It can also be tailored to the organization's specific needs, meaning they can choose the amount of points given and what actions in the app these will be attached to. You can, for example, get points by reading news, logging in to the app daily, answering surveys, taking training, etc.
How much time does it take to set processes for information and its structure to set corporate and local news?
Developing a structure and process for the corporate/regional/local news flow for MyVestas is a task that certainly needs to be taken into account. It is important that the flow integrates with the flow of existing internal channels, which is why we are currently revising both in Corporate Communications to create one common channel strategy and editorial flow.
Do all your first-line workers have company phones? If not, have you received any concerns/complaints regarding the employees having to use their private phones for company purposes?
Our employees are using private phones or private PC's/kiosk PC's in the production hall. The vast majority are willing to use their own mobile - especially if the content is relevant and appealing enough. We strive not to send push notifications outside of working hours - it can be troublesome, though, as we have 3 shifts in most of the factories. The users are able to administer their notifications and switch them off if wanted.
What is the process?
Among the 76% users every month - can you see if it is first-line workers or mostly "office" employees?
Is there an integration to the news created in Sharepoint or does it require for news to be created in the App?
You are able to integrate with both Sharepoint and Yammer so you don't need to post in different channels.
Are there any task-based or to do functions in the app?
Yes, there is a task management module where you can create check/to lists and distribute tasks to employees; store checks, etc. At Vestas, we have not activated it (yet), but there is a possibility for us to do so- we are taking it step by step.
Do you have experience and/or trouble with the app competing with other channels, likes mail and classic social media, like Facebook Messenger?
Yes, we see that the app is competing with other channels. The idea is that we get all communication occurring on non-company channels such as Facebook, into the app. We have seen that clients are actually able to close the Facebook groups they have been previously using because they now use the app for it.
Therefore, the company actually has 'ownership' of the communication that employees have in relation to work, instead of Facebook. It's important to set guidelines for how employees should use email or the app, and that's a decision the client makes and works with.
How exactly do you train and onboard your firstline workers?
Training is not really needed as it's very intuitive. There is, however, a walkthrough of the different features in the app and a guide on good digital behavior that appears the first time an employee downloads the app. And during the first days of roll-out, local change agents are available to give a quick introduction to all employees.
How many languages do you support with the app?
Relesys currently supports 23 different languages within our platform. We are always updating and expanding our language support, and we are very much up to co-developing together with our clients, so they get the functionalities they need for their business.
Are the country pages in the App in local language? This also applies to Corporate news which is being translated
Yes, the front pages are shown in local languages and can be translated into any language that you have in the app. Automatic translation can be added as a feature in the app, where the app owner can write an article in English and then push a button which translates the article into other languages. You can then review the translation before you post it. The social wall has a built-in autotranslation so there is the possibility to translate it into the language the user has chosen.
What's next in the app development journey?
For Vestas, it's to integrate with other internal systems to ease the workload for team leads and support the 'one point of entry' ambition. We are constantly working on developing the platform to fit our needs, and here Relesys is a great partner.
